What is gender equity?

We explain what gender equality is and what are the objectives of this human right. Also, why is it so important.

  1. What is gender equity?

Gender equity (or gender equality ) refers to an equal appreciation of the dignity that both men and women possess. This term refers to equal treatment for both genders , beyond physical differences.

The word gender encompasses several definitions that are related to each other. Gender is a mental state through which a person passes when he determines himself as a man or woman.

Transsexualism is a fairly common phenomenon in which a man thinks he is a woman because he has all the typical feminine attributes, or also the case of a woman who thinks he is a man because he possesses more masculine attributes than those of the feminine sex.

The great difference between men and women in relation to decision making or power is practically the main cause of the social and political weakness that drives poverty. Currently, we seek to implement in society a greater development by the most discriminated gender and greater social justice.

It was from the 70s when the international movement that women led became firm. They demanded to establish gender equity and equate their access to health , education and political participation, whether local or not.

In 1995, the World Conference on Women was held in Beijing , where several organizations such as international agencies and governmental and non-governmental institutions have encouraged the use of strategies to raise awareness about gender inequalities. These strategies for the development of gender equity are regulated locally and internationally.

  1. Why is gender equity important?

Gender equality
The contribution of men and women in society must be respected equally.

Gender equality is a right of the human being . Women often do not enjoy the same rights as men (in the socio-economic and political sphere) due to structural differences and unequal distribution of power.

The development of strategies for the promotion of gender equity is not aimed at establishing in society a single model of gender relations, but seeks equal access, both for women and men , to the different spaces and services they request. .

It is important that there is gender equality to correctly lead the governance of a State or country . If men and women have equal participation in the decision-making processes , the differences in the political system will be reduced, and each one can express their ideas, priorities and development techniques.

To achieve a balance in society and a correct development of it, it is essential that the contribution of men and women to it is respected , fulfilling the role of citizens and citizens, social individuals and resource generators. As we know, the women’s struggle continues , since they have limited access to decision-making in society. Men also do not share household chores, such as maintaining it.

This produces an aggravation of the inequalities between both genders, worsening exploitation and making the task of maintaining balance in society difficult. It is relevant to develop different strategies that provide equal opportunities for both men and women, so that both can be active characters in the community , with equal access to resources, management and decision making.

It is very common for men and women to go through situations and fight against poverty in different ways, with women being the ones who are usually in greater exposure . Integrating women not only means empowering them, but it is an opportunity to provide new strategies and resources for their fight against poverty.
