What is equity?

We explain what equity is and what are the values ​​it promotes. What types of equity exist and what meanings the term has.

  1. What is equity?

The word equity comes from the Latin aequĭtas . This term is associated with the values ​​of equality and justice.

Equity tries to promote equality , beyond the differences in sex, culture , economic sectors to which it belongs, etc. That is why it is usually related to social justice, since it defends the same conditions and opportunities for all people , without distinction, only adapting in particular cases.

In other words, in order for equity to be real, the rule in general cannot be applied to all individuals , but certain exceptions must be adhered to for each particular case. In addition, each person must be able to assert their rights, no matter where they come from.

Equity fights against poverty , discrimination , racism , xenophobia , homophobia , among other issues that foster distance and differences between individuals.

  1. Gender equality

Gender equity promotes gender equality in all areas.

When talking about gender equity, reference is made to equality and justice, in which people, regardless of their sex, can assert their rights and possess the same opportunities and responsibilities . Some cases where the lack of gender equity is evident is discrimination when looking for a job or in violence against women.

Although it is recognized that there are differences between women and men, it does not mean that one of the sexes is inferior or superior to the other , that is why they must have the same means and capabilities when working in the work, family life , political and social.

  1. Social equity

When talking about social equity policies , reference is made to health issues , that is, it is affordable for all the inhabitants of a state . The same in the field of education , that anyone who wants it has the opportunity to access all three levels of education.

Also, these policies must be added equal employment opportunities , which are also worthy positions. Living conditions are also elementary, and not only do they refer to good housing, but also access to drinking water , electricity , sewage networks, etc.

Many other policies aimed at social equity can be mentioned, but one of its main objectives is to achieve greater inclusion of all people in a given state and raise their standard of living, until they reach true social well-being.

  1. Equity in Law and Economy

Equity is one of the essential values ​​of law.

Within the Science of Law the value of equity acquires great importance. Although it does not respond to one of the  sources of law, it  is usually used as a means or technique to correct the law . This tool allows the standard to be adapted to the particular needs of each case. In other words, the law applies according to certain circumstances.

That is why it is considered as one of the essential values ​​of the Law , since it has a position if you want more human, since certain considerations are taken into account. It should be clarified that this is a position that has been much discussed since the time of Aristotle

From the  Economic Sciences there  is talk of fairness as the justice that should be applied to the tax treatment of people . This means that the tax burdens must vary according to each particular case to truly achieve equity.
