What is Limit?

We explain what a limit is and how geographical boundaries are established. In addition, other meanings of the term in various fields.

  1. What is Limit?

The concept of limit comes from Latin, and means edge.

In the first place, from geography it is understood as the real or imaginary line that separates two contiguous territories . They may be demarcated through political conventions established between the authorities of said territories, or it may be fixed in a manner coincident with a natural geographical accident, such as a river, a sea or a mountain range.

On the basis of the limits established by common agreement, the neighboring States clearly agree on the competences (political, military, economic, etc.) of each one. If they were not respected correctly, there could be a conflict between countries .

In the case of coexistence among the inhabitants of those places, a new concept appears, which is that of the border, with which the limit is often confused . While the limit is an imaginary line in many cases, the border is a specific point that formally separates two countries or international spaces. Normally across the borders, the countries are entered and exited from them, after displaying the documentation required by the relevant authorities in each case.

  1. Other uses of the term

Limit
Limits are also restrictions that are set for children.

On the other hand, the word limit also refers to the condition of extreme (physical force or time, for example) , which is not possible to exceed. People often go through situations that wear out their physical or psychological forces, so they cannot extend infinitely. Everyone knows where their limits are in that regard. In contractual fields, for example, when the end of the agreed term is coming, it is considered that it is before a limit.

In cases of extreme danger, in which there is great uncertainty about what will happen, or that a decision must be taken that can have serious consequences, it can be said that it is facing a borderline situation .

When it comes to living together between people (especially adults with children), the term is used to designate the restrictions that must be established so that the child learns to cope with the prevailing social norms.

For psychology , these are repressions that people have inwardly for some imposed or personal cause. That is why when it is said that someone, for example, ‘ has no limits ‘, it is being said that it is not governed by the norms of coexistence that are supposed to serve us all. That person ignores them and eventually adheres to the legal and social consequences that derive from that.

In the science of mathematics , the word is used in the analysis of sequences and equations to refer to its infinitesimal approach behavior without reaching a point .

In the field of trade, we speak of a limited liability company (SRL) or limited company (SL) to refer to the type of commercial company composed of a limited number of partners that participate of equal value and in which the liability is limited to  capital  contributed.

In the field of advertising , we hear about promotions for a limited time (or, less frequently, for unlimited time); in matters of production we talk about limiting factors, and also about limitations to perform various tasks.
