What is volleyball?

We explain what volleyball is and the main features of this game. Also, what are the referees and helpers that interfere.

  1. What is volleyball?

Volleyball or also called volleyball  is a sport that  consists of two teams, consisting of six players each , that face each other, within a court divided by a net in equal parts.
The main objective of this game is to pass the ball over the net and that it hits the ground of the opposing terrain.

The game begins with a serve the ball to the opposite field team . The duration of the play may vary, depending on whether a foul was committed during the game or if the opposing team could not intercept the ball and return it to the opposing field. Each team has three blows to the ball, which must be clean. The winning team of the first game will be assigned a point and will have a new serve available.

Among its main rules we can find the famous rotation . The rotation takes place according to the points achieved by each team.

Volleyball has different modalities, which vary depending on each country and also on physical disabilities; This is how you can differentiate sitting volleyball or standing volleyball.

  1. Technical characteristics of volleyball

The volleyball ball measures 65 centimeters and weighs almost 300 grams.
  • Field or court : It has a rectangular shape. It measures 18 meters long and 9 meters wide. The central line indicates the area to be occupied by the teams and has a free or free zone between 3 and 5 meters.
  • Networks : This has a length of approximately 10 meters, and an anchor of 1 meter.
  • Ball / Ball : It is very different from that used in football , since it is 65 centimeters in circumference and weighs almost 300 grams, making it an easy element to handle. The raw material that composes them, in general, is leather, although there are also synthetic materials.
  • Uniform : The clothes that players must wear are: Shorts, T-shirt, elbow pads and knee pads, socks and tennis shoes.
  • Time : The matches are made up of sets, which can be three, four or five. The team that manages to succeed in three of them will win the match. To win a round it is necessary to obtain at least twenty-five goals, being mandatory to have two points of difference with the opposing team.
  • Tiebreaker : The team that obtains 15 points, with the two of difference, will win.
  1. The referees and helpers in volleyball

There are several referees who work during a volleyball match. The main referee is the one who is located next to the posts and his objective is to direct the game , giving the pertinent indications and taking out cards when necessary. There is also a second judge, whose role is to be the principal’s assistant, placing himself on the post vacated by him.

On the other hand, we find the scorers, in charge of keeping track of points, changes, rotations and fouls.

Also, the line judges (which can be two or four and also assist the main referee) realize if the ball fell on or off the court.

  1. Volleyball Movements

Blocking is when the player prevents the ball from passing into his area.
  • Take out : It occurs when a player projects the ball towards the opponent’s sector.
  • Block : When a player prevents the ball thrown by his opponent from entering his area.
  • Receive : Prevent the ball from touching the ground , placing the hands and arms in a suitable position, thus being able to return the shot.
  • Place / Arm : In a series of no more than three passes between the players of the same team, it seeks to achieve a play of so much.
  • Attack : Send the ball to the neglected area or the disadvantaged player in an accurate blow.
  • Top : Return the ball unexpectedly, hard.
