When we talk about physical education, we refer to a pedagogical discipline that encompasses the human body from various physical perspectives, aspiring to an integral education with respect to the human body that contributes to care and health , but also to sports training and against sedentary life.

Just as in the various educational bodies the individual is mentally and socially trained, they are taught trades, techniques, knowledge , physical education also  aspires to educate him in the use of his own body, whether recreational and athletic, or of simple health and survival, strengthening bones and musculature in crucial stages of human development .

The current trend in physical education is towards the exploitation of the adaptability and versatility of the body , teaching young people to physically deal with different situations or requirements, and thus increasing their bodily abilities.

This, in addition, complemented by an emotional formation towards healthy competitiveness , towards teamwork and companionship, towards the assessment of difference and respect for human rights, all of which is equally important.

It is common in physical education subjects to practice sports, athletic and rhythmic exercises, exercise circuits, as well as the approach to group dynamics and cooperative activities.

  1. History of physical education

Humans practiced physical education in the Ancient Ages , forming an important part of their conception of culture and coming to conceive of great powers such as the marathons of Ancient Greece, or the Roman struggle.

In those times, the meaning of this was to train citizens ready for war if necessary, often trying to combine it with philosophical instruction that would achieve a combination between wise man and action.

Modern physical education was born as such in the early nineteenth century , in the academies of Switzerland and Germany, with various sports, largely inherited from the physical disciplines that the former aristocracy, usually linked to military trades, practiced throughout life, like fencing and horse riding.

To this were added more popular sports disciplines, and then speed sports, which often combined the body with mechanical tools, such as the bicycle. But it would not be until the 20th century that the first teacher training institutions in the field of physical education would be opened.
