What is fisheries management?

Fisheries management is just one of the activities developed by the Fisheries Engineering professional title, as well as aquaculture (fish and shellfish farming) and fish processing (related to production and industrialization).

This type of administration implies the regularization of fishing activities, including the registration of fishermen, registration of equipment, obtaining authorizations for fishing and navigation, collection of fishing income, collection of activity data and inspection.

The fisheries manager must have extensive knowledge of the fishing activity, especially of the legislation involved (environmental, labor and specific to the activity) and the economic, social, biological, legal, political and environmental implications of their activity.

Especially the latter, because there is a great concern of the entities involved in fisheries inspection with the maintenance of the supply of fish that is above the limit that can be considered sustainable, posing another challenge for the professional in this area.

According to Eng. Carlos Alexandre Gomes de Alencar, a fisheries engineer from Seap (Special Secretariat for Aquaculture, linked to the Federal Government), the market for professionals with specialized training in fisheries management or engineering remains confusing.

There is a market, but there is a lack of awareness among entrepreneurs involved in fishing activity of the need to hire professionals with the appropriate training, which ends up generating a competitive market by including biologists, zoologists and other professionals in the same “sieve” , but with a remuneration that does not reach the expectations of most professionals. (G1).

Perhaps for this reason, the largest field of this professional, today, is found in public bodies and educational and research institutions related to fishing. Even so, the market is promising as Brazil is a country that has a high potential for fishing, especially with the expansion of aquaculture.

Not to mention the potential of the foreign market, which is also a good option for those who are graduating in this area.

The fisheries engineering course has an average duration of 5 years and, in addition to the normal engineering disciplines, includes subjects in biology, zoology, ecology, oceanography, economics, fisheries management, microbiology, fish quality control, surveying, aquaculture, navigation, fish farming. , shrimp farming, fishing techniques, photogrammetry, photointerpretation, dynamics of fishing populations, meteorology, etc.
